A Room of One’s Home

Masterworks 2026: A Room of One’s Home, curated by Bianca Weeko Martin, is currently on display at the Riverside Gallery, showcasing the graduate thesis works of six Waterloo Architecture alumni. Through drawings, counter-archival projects, and artifacts, the exhibition explores the complex intersections of diasporic identity, spatial memory, and migration. Rather than romanticizing diaspora, the projects ask critical questions about cultural endurance and how the built environment helps individuals reconnect with generational histories. This compelling collection invites visitors to experience how the spaces we call home carry forward communities and stories, running until October 1, 2026.

Students sweep national steel design competition

University of Waterloo architecture and engineering students claimed the top three prizes at the 2025-2026 Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) Architectural Student Design Competition. James Miller and Luke Carone won the Award of Excellence for Resonance, while the teams behind Thirteen Ascents and UBC Tropical Conservatory secured second and third place, respectively. The national contest challenges students to creatively utilize exposed structural steel in ambitious architectural frameworks. Under the guidance of professors Terri Meyer Boake and Cory Zurell, the winning Waterloo projects were recognized for their unique interplay of scale, light, and natural greenery.

Paths to Practice

Paths to Practice is coming this fall 2026, hosted by the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and the Co-Operative Education Department. This event is an excellent opportunity for employers to network with students across both the Bachelor of Architectural Studies Program and the Master of Architecture Program, helping to expand co-op and hiring applicant pools, while also learning about recent research and successes coming out of the school.

2026 Waterloo Architecture Student Awards Ceremony

Join students, faculty, sponsors, family and staff for our annual celebration of student achievement at the 2026 School of Architecture awards ceremony on June 11.

The evening will begin with a reception in the third-floor Loft featuring light refreshments and appetizers, alongside an opportunity to explore student studio projects and connect with members of the Waterloo Architecture community. The Awards Ceremony will then take place in the first-floor Laurence A. Cummings Lecture Theatre.

Meredith Moore - Deconstruction + The Circular Economy

Join us for our upcoming Grand Valley Society of Architects talk by Meredith Moore on Thursday, May 28th, from 6-7pm.

Meredith Moore is the founder of Ouroboros Deconstruction, a Toronto-based company working to recover and rehome building materials before they become waste. With over 30 projects completed and a 90% landfill diversion rate, her work spans salvage audits, hands-on deconstruction, and the development of local reuse systems that keep quality materials in circulation. She also leads Ouroboros Salvage, a registered charity focused on material recovery and community engagement. An interior designer by trade, Meredith previously served as a founding director of the Healthy Materials Library at Parsons School of Design, working to make material health information more accessible across the design and construction industries. She brings that same orientation to her work in Toronto: treating buildings as collections of materials worth understanding, preserving, and passing on, and making deconstruction a practical, valued part of how the city builds and rebuilds.

Provisional Lives Opening Reception

Join us on March 5, from 6:00–8:00 PM, to celebrate the launch of this faculty research exhibition exploring architecture shaped by mobility, precarity, and resilience. Featuring work by Professors Robert Jan van Pelt and Anwar Jaber, the exhibition examines how temporary structures and institutions under occupation reveal urgent ethical and political questions.

Crest at Winter Stations 2026

A team of students from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and the Department of Architectural Engineering has been selected as a winner in the 2026 Winter Stations international design competition. Their installation, Crest, is now on public exhibition at Woodbine Beach in Toronto from February 16 to March 30, 2026.
