Historically, Pride gatherings emerged from the first large-scale protests for LGBTQ2 rights. In Canada, the first demonstrations took place in Ottawa and Vancouver in 1971. By 1973, Pride events were held in several Canadian cities, including Montréal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Toronto's Pride weekend in June is now among the largest Pride events in North America. To celebrate Pride Month, Waterloo Architecture has compiled a list of resources that are available for its community members.

Join our expert panel of speakers as they discuss how – by considering diversity at early stages of design and planning – public spaces can become more accessible to marginalised and disempowered groups.
Despite the emergence of queer enclaves in many cities across the world, there is still an urgent need to rethink the development of safe public spaces. The rise in hate crimes in recent years calls for interventions which increase inclusion and acceptance of marginalised groups, not least LGBTQ+ people, and create more welcoming, hospitable environments for all members of these communities.

A blue work shirt. A golden ring, a promise. Smooth, solid, reddish wood. A copper wire, connecting two places. Khaki trousers in a desert landscape. Charcoal, burning bright. White, whipped egg whites.
What paths might have been traced for certain materials, pigments and hues to color and be present in the environments of the everyday? How do these things travel across lands and oceans, interwoven in the fabric of colonial history? In this talk, artist, researcher and writer Luiza Prado will offer a critical analysis of these stories, unearthing colonial routes and thinking of the possibilities opened up by the rejection of colonial narratives.

Join us at Enlisted as we hear from panelists about their experiences working as LGBTQ+ designers in Utah. The panel discussion will be shaped by questions and topics that the community is interested in learning more about (so leave those questions in your RSVP!) but we expect to discuss topics such as finding inspiration in identity, navigating the workplace, disparities within the design community, and allyship.

Queering Urbanism is an online event series initiated by B.Queer, The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment’s network for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) students, staff and allies. Organised by Claire Tunnacliffe, Jordana Ramalho and Ben Campkin, the series connects queer and trans studies to urban studies and practices of urbanism, foregrounding issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in the built environment.
This event will explore queer futurity through the lens of spatial and environmental imaginaries. It will ask how modes of queer futurity engage with the future, particularly when the pandemic and climate change have highlighted the 'queerness' of this future. Tim Waterman, Associate Professor at the Bartlett School of Architecture, will be in conversation with Sarah Ensor, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Both Tim and Sarah bring a nuanced and varied approach to thinking through queer futurity in today's world, and to the question of how we plan, design, and build futures which centre the environment, community, and care.

The tools we use to create narratives with AI, furthering and expanding our human language, are modern in their performance but simultaneously stuck in the past carrying our ingrained biases and stereotyping. How can one reclaim agency and fight biases with (AI) storytelling?
In their work, Emily Martinez focuses on critically looking, un/learning, un/making, speaking and dreaming about queer imaginings and AI. During the behind-the-scenes talk, Emily will walk us through their projects such as Queer AI, Ultimate Fantasy, and Unsupervised Pleasures

This session will explore the ways in which colonization has impacted and erased queer communities from “Western” history, as well as enforced a heteronormative society on cultures across the globe. Participants are, invited to challenge their own biases, beliefs, and experiences to further understand the impact of colonization in the framework of our lives, ways of thinking and belief systems. This is a continuation of the first workshop from Pride Week, we will now explore different cultures and traditions from around the world and address their queer history.

Pride Info and Resources:
Pride at Waterloo: Pride at Waterloo is an opportunity to prioritize the diverse voices and experiences of two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (2SLGBTQ+) students, faculty and staff, celebrating and acknowledging their significant contributions and vital roles within the campus community. There are many clubs that support the 2SLGBTQ community here at the university.
Glow Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity: Glow is the oldest continually-running university-based 2SLGBTQ+ group in Canada. Run entirely by dedicated student volunteers, Glow promotes a healthy attitude towards all sexual orientations and gender identities on the UWaterloo campus by providing a wide variety of peer support, social events, advocacy work, and resources.
Glow Centre Peer Support Form: low provides a strong support network for all 2SLGBTQ+ students, with appointment times for peer support available every week, which can be booked through this form.
SPECTRUM: They serve, affirm, and support the well-being of 2SLGBTQ+ people in Waterloo Region. They have a variety of Pride events running this month.
