Sharing his heritage

Engineering's Elder in Residence offers courses and counselling grounded in his Indigenous background

Passionate about sharing his Indigenous heritage, an adjunct architecture professor named a new course after the ceremony his ancestors have used for thousands of years to welcome visitors to their homeland — At the Woods Edge.

Hive is an interlocking masonry wall composed of 175 unique 3D-printed clay bricks. Combining traditional ceramics, smart geometry and robotic precision, the design embraces the natural material properties of clay, allowing its malleability and fluidity to shape the clay units’ form and surface quality.

LeiLei Zhao is one of two winners of the American Galvanizers Association's (AGA) 2022 Galvanize the Future Scholarship. He participated in an essay contest with applicants throughout North America enrolled in architecture, construction or engineering programs. Two scholarships are awarded annually ($2,500 each) for the top essays submitted. He is currently working on his Architectural Studies Degree with a major in Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

A Fellow of the RAIC College is a member of the RAIC who has achieved professional eminence or has rendered distinctive service to the profession or to the community at large. Fellowship is bestowed upon individuals through a nomination process administered by the RAIC College and recognizes members for their contribution to research, scholarship, public service, or professional standing to the good of architecture in Canada, or elsewhere.
