Minutes of the Arts Computing Departmental Meeting 

held on August 28, 2014

  • Dawn
    • CTSC update: RT 4, IST staff change, lynda.com budget request
      • RT 4 is expected to be live in October. November/December articles and knowledge base will be useable. (Public won't be able to see the articles.) It was suggested that Lisa provide ACO with the training. 
    • IST staff change-
      • Kris Olafsen is leaving UW.
    • lynda.com training budget request

      • Bob Hicks (IST) is requesting $10000 to fund an open campus-wide license. This license would be available anytime for staff, faculty, and grad student use.

    • Office space requested for Arts Liaison Librarian, Tim Ireland. Tim will use Doug's office for the Fall 2014 term for his office hours.​

    • -more rollover computers to arrive
      • 6 Macs (5 laptops) and 2 windows (1 laptop, 1 desktop) computers have been ordered

    • Autoreply setting for people outside campus still doesn't work on my test.
      • ​​both the web and the desktop interfaces
      • Herbert to create RT for IST to investigate
    • Assisting Scott with 3 laptops for St Paul
    • Deployed Dylan and Jesse's project on artslab.
      • Projects should have a depository
    • Restarted my pc to test out Firefox 24.7 and it failed to reinstall, will check the logs and forward errors to Scott.
    • Network issue in HH249 English Department, Keith figured out it was on the wrong vlan.
    • Closed the ticket for the vpn issue with Ana Ferrer.
    • Assisted Diana Bumstead at St Jerome's with an issue with regards to sending an email. She copied the email from a page in Quest, the user is forwarding her email to an msn account. Although the email copied from Quest said cbmaslen@uwaterloo.ca, the email that outlook used was cbmaslen@connect.uwaterloo.ca, this failed, however manually typing cbmaslen@uwaterloo.ca works.
    • Created a helpdesk ticket for a user in Political Science that needs help reactivating his windows computer, we tried over the phone but we decided it would be better for him to drop by the helpdesk.
    • Working on finalizing the OFAS project.

    • Xerox printer installed in AL foyer
    • IT Best Practices project wrap up
      •  or 4 areas for BP procedures: Helpdesk, Projects, Change Management
      • will be a presentaiton at IST Friday morning seminar
    • SugarCRM
      • Installed some programs and they failed (Ubuntu, etc.)
    • All Arts printers now on private subnets or firewalled - only Renison printers remain
      • Some were toner bombed
    • Bad network switch in HH replaced
    • Spreadsheet of virtual host systems – shared documents
    • https redirect on artsresearch system
    • Missing BITS service on Lynn Graham's system - suspect there may be more
      • Original mail merge problems; noticed it hadn’t gotten update
      • Missing bits service (wider issue)
      • Check wsus reports
      • Track down last update

    • Guy Poirier legacy CD database, used xp-mode
      • 64 bit machine--What bit was the software?
      • Drupal/WordPress security updates
      • Updated Chrome, Flash, Silverlight, Office 2011, VLC for Macs
      • Spring evaluation computations/reports completed.
      • SSL issues clean-up, mostly weak ciphers being offered

      • Nevil to incorporate a button on the Vanguard testing page--"software to be tested"

    • New Coops: Chris, Kelly, Komal-job shadowed
    • 3 undergrad labs re-imaged
    • St Paul's: 3 new AS laptops and re-image one SPC laptop
    • Vanguard testing: 6 Common Apps and Acrobat Pro update

    • International Work Study hirings
      • 2 positions for lang lab
    • Ad Astra access to view room bookings
      • Can see bookings for various rooms (vs. Infosilem)
