Dawn

  • new email committee: Campus Email Services Committee
  • HP thin client demo units to ship early next week
  • SANS Security Essentials Course of possible interest
  • Dawn was not able to attend the meeting.  Scott reported on the HP Thin Clients.
Keith, Dawn and Scott went to an HP presentation on their thin client line. They have a solution that may work for the Language labs that include zero-touch thin clients and servers running Microsoft Multiseat Server 2011. They are sending some clients for us to test this week or next. These same thin clients can be used to upgrade the Neoware systems in Arts Lecture Hall (AL) and use only 5W of power (less issue with overheating, etc.)

Keith

  • Sony Vaio systems for Culture of Cities
Sociology has 2 Sony Vaio systems from the Toronto offices of the Culture of Cities to be set up and installed with Nexus.
  • Printer firmware updates
Printer firmware updates were applied to printers across Arts.  There were some printers in School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) that could not be updated because they appear not to be set up correctly.  I have asked Colin for more info on these printers but have not received a reply.
  • Power outage - need to review Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS) load balance, Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) & console connections
The power outage indicated some shortcomings in the KVM labeling and the need to keep it up to date.  This issue has been primarily due to the fact that we have virtualized many systems over the last year.  We also need to review the UPS load balance from the remaining servers and isolate the UPS supply for the network rack in order to maximize the uptime for the network.
  • Online Faculty Application System (OFAS) for Canadian Research Chairs (CRC)
An updated version of the OFAS software is being modified for use for the Canadian Research Chair position.  Keith is waiting on final wording and details for the installation.

Guillermo

  • Power outage: Mac Lab and Drama network printers.
After the power outage, artsxserv1 (the Mac lab server) lost the connection with Nexus. Re-joining solved the problem. Also, network printers in Drama started printing with missing characters when the default Font (Calibri) was used on MS Word documents. Restarting artsvms fixed the problem.
  • Lion upgrade on Mac Book Air
It's possible to upgrade a Mac Book Air to Lion by using a 4 Gigabyte (GB) memory stick by making an image of the installation DVD you get from the CHIP, copying it on the memory stick and run it from the Mac Book Air.
  • artsapp and artsapp1 patched to FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p5
Guillermo patched artsapp and artsapp1 with the latest Extended release: FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p5.

Nevil

  • South-Western Ontario Research Data Centre (SWORDC) hardware upgrade approved by Stats Can.  The hardware plan was submitted by Lori Curtis for CFI funding application.
  • Nexus windows 7 public folder removed from library
The configuration of the Nexus user space on the new server is finished for Windows 7; XP is being tested. Disabling public folders as part of library still needs to be figured out but it’s not stopping any migration.  Keith will migrate his account.
  • Another WatIAM question and answer session
The FAQ / minutes will be shared by Information Systems & Technology (IST).
Quest, HR and Phone services are authorities with Phone Services being the primary authority for WatIAM entries and can override other changes.
  • Away March 14 returning April 2nd
  • E-Prime and Psych 398 for summer term
E-prime will be used in Psychology-Anthropology-Sociology (PAS) 1237 during summer term by Myra Fernandes’s Psych 398.  Nevil is currently testing.
  • Active Directory (AD) consolidation project
The project is moving forward in Arts.

Scott

  • Printers on artsvms vs nxsartsapp matched
A couple of printers needed to be renamed.  Some printers were not in DNS properly
  • changed back the DNS Suffix and DNS Search order
  • Updated the Lenovo M91p image for the upcoming staff rollover (need to add drivers for previous hardware yet)
  • Rollover: Created Group Policy Objects (GPO) for rollover systems from Artsfaculty (will be Nexus), created Security Groups for each GPO and added computers to membership, Imaging document updated and up on Wiki, list of software for each system sent to Barb.

Sean

  • Quick way to rename domain computer remotely and update AD: netdom renamecomputer allipper-sr11 /NewName:plcook-sr11 /UserD:artsfaculty!!sean /PasswordD:* /UserO:artsfaculty!!sean /PasswordO:* /REBoot
  • Launched Arts Computing Experience (ACE) web registration
  • Began winter 2012 evals
  • Congress 2012 WiFi, dedicated SSID with Pre-Shared keys for 7000 UW guests likely.
  • New Advancement Director starting April 4th

Doug

  • We have upgraded from Camtasia 6 to Camtasia 7
  • The videos for connect mail change-over are/were near completion but will need to be re-edited to comply with Government policy/law by adding captions for hearing impaired. All videos will need to be done, including the review of the videos that are finished or partially completed.
  • There is a training video that Doug will review for Camtasia 7. The interface is quite different but all in all, it looks good with more features. Hopefully it will be simpler to edit.

Todd

  • Modern Languages (ML) 117 Projector search  (and Test unit from Sanyo vendor vs Instructional Technologies and Multimedia Services [ITMS] test units)
The search for replacement projectors (there are two to replace) continues.  After some delay Al McQueen from Electronic Presentation Group will ship a test unit shipped to the Language Lab for testing. Another (more expensive) projector will be available to test from Marcel David in ITMS.
  • Dell Optiplex GX 620 machines in ML 325 (French Studies)
Two Dell Optiplex GX 620s (not supported systems) cannot be swapped for newer systems as they are student workstations.
There is a Dell Optiplex GX 620 system in an office of Germanic and Slavic Studies that could be replaced in the next sessional rollover.

Lisa

  • connect moves: some issues with actual mail move; will schedule more later in March
When Giles moves the mail, sometimes it moves without a problem, but sometimes it has errors and the messages need to be deleted from the person’s connect account.  Giles then needs to do the move again.  Lisa will talk with him about this issue. Lisa will schedule more moves for later in March.
  • Rollover documents updated
Lisa is working on re-vamping the checklist for the students’s reference to make it more usable.
  • surplus room progressing
  • Help Desk renovations -end of April (tentative)
The renovations are tentatively planned for the end of April.  We will need to find alternative work space for the coops during the renovation time.
