Colton James (CJ) Moore was a fourth-year Biomedical Engineering student and was pursuing his dream to dive at the Olympics. His ultimate goal was to become a teacher. CJ’s life was tragically taken in the summer of 2018. While at the University of Waterloo, CJ successfully balanced the requirements of his engineering courses and training as a competitive diver. He was a great student to teach. Despite his busy schedule, CJ was always there for his friends and classmates, he took the time and listened. CJ was kind, humble and compassionate. He cared about people and his community and was a friend to many. He was a talented athlete and engineering student as well as a musician. CJ holds the distinction of being the first ever graduate of the University of Waterloo Biomedical Engineering program, having been awarded his degree posthumously in fall of 2018. CJ touched the life of many people and the biomedical engineering undergraduate program is honored to commemorate CJ through the CJ Moore Memorial Award for Biomedical Engineering established by his family.
We are proud to announce that this year’s recipient of the CJ Moore Memorial Award for Biomedical Engineering is Lauren Toy. Lauren was an outstanding high school student as well as an accomplished competitive swimmer. She was the recipient of her high school Grade 12 Female Athlete of the Year award. She came first provincially four times in the 100m breaststroke, and set a divisional record. She has also excelled in soccer at the provincial level. She has been a team captain, and an insightful and committed coach to younger swimmers. Lauren was also significantly engaged in her community and contributed her swimming expertise to the Special Olympics program. Lauren’s academic and athletic achievements combined with her community leadership make her a truly deserving recipient of the CJ Moore Memorial Award.
