Career leader (Workshop facilitator)

Overview

The Centre for Career Development (CCD) is hiring career leaders to facilitate peer-to-peer workshops for students seeking work search support and/or further education support. We invite applications from both undergraduate and graduate students in all University of Waterloo program.  


Qualifications

Essential skills

  • Strong public speaking and communication skills
  • Ability to tailor conversations and content to meet the individualized needs of students
  • Ability to interact non-judgementally
  • Excitement for coaching students through the employment/further education process 
  • Ability to learn (not memorize) nuanced and detailed information 
  • Basic research and information gathering skills
  • Registered student status (full or part-time) in an undergraduate or graduate program

Helpful skills

  • Ability to present information clearly
  • Collaboration skills; drawing on others' strengths and sharing yours
  • Basic counselling skills
  • One-on-one advising, coaching or tutoring experience
  • Mental health training or knowledge

Responsibilities

This role supports the Undergraduate team and/or the Graduate and Further Education teams at CCD in facilitating workshop content on résumés/CVs, cover letters/personal statements, interviews, networking and other career-related topics for undergraduate and graduate students seeking employment opportunities and/or to students looking to apply to graduate or professional school. Currently there are four positions open:

  • 3 Undergraduate-level career leaders
  • 1 Graduate-level career leader

There are three main components of these roles:

Preparing workshops

  • Review workshop materials and understand core employment/further education topics
  • Edit PowerPoint presentations to include your own understanding of the content and lived experiences of seeking work/pursuing further education or supporting others through their work search or the graduate/professional school application process

Facilitating workshops

  • Facilitate in-person and online workshops to undergraduate and/or graduate students seeking employment or pursuing further education with audience sizes ranging from 5 students to 100+ students
  • Help students navigate feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, nervousness and insecurity
  • Create a safe space for students to engage with the facilitator, other attendees and the content
  • Support students in reviewing their experiences and identifying their strengths
  • Answer questions on employment or further education fundamentals as they arise within workshops
  • Be available for custom workshop requests for student groups and classrooms

Support CCD programming

  • Effectively refers students to appointments with career advisors and other CCD services
  • Learn about supportive services offered at the University of Waterloo and in our community; refer when necessary
  • Co-facilitate presentations with a career advisor to offer unique student insight to workshop content

Time commitment

  • Two-term commitment with the possibility to extend contract in subsequent terms. Please indicate your ability to commit to two terms of casual employment (Fall 2024 - Winter 2025) in your application.
  • 4 -7 hours of work per week (more hours in the first month of term when there's a higher demand; fewer hours in the remaining months of the term. 
  • Flexibility to work from Monday to Friday between 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST. (we will work around individual schedules)
  • Multiple training opportunities in September
  • Career leader check-in meetings to review schedules, provide feedback, engage in ongoing training and plan for future workshops
  • This position requires occasional on-campus workshop facilitation. If you are able to be on campus, please indicate this avilitity in your application.
