43. Technetium. Pen and ink drawing of radioactive symbol, lightbulb and electrical outlet, human with lungs superimposed, two smoke stacks, a map of Italy, 1937, Perrier and Segre names.
Technetium: One of technetium's most practical applications lies within the field of nuclear medicine and biology, a trait I felt was important to portray through the appearance of the radioactive symbol.  Equally important, is the danger it poses if inhaled in dust form, so I also included the graph of the human lungs.  As the first element to be artificially produced, I included two smokestacks to symbolize the man made qualities of technetium.  The light bulb and electrical outlet are used to represent its role as a superconductor.  The map of Italy pays homage to its discoverers: Perrier and Segre in Italy in 1937.  In order to capitalise on the modern, artificial nature of the element, I chose to use pen and ink as my medium
