Introductory Analytical Chemistry
- For honours students only.
- Available to honours non-major students if space permits.
This course introduces students to the principals and applications of analytical chemistry. Topics covered will include such things as experimental errors, statistics of measurements, gravimetric analysis, and electrochemistry. Various titrations will be highlighted, including acid/base and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), among others. Chemical equilibrium and acid-base equilibria will be touched on. The fundamentals of instrumental methods including spectrophotometry (UV-visible absorption, atomic absorption/emission), fluorometry, chromatography (liquid and gas) and mass spectrometry will be discussed. Students will develop critical problem-solving skills and an understanding of data analysis in the context of chemical analysis.
