CHEM 220L

Quantitative Chemical Analysis Laboratory

  • It is highly recommended that CHEM 140 is completed prior to taking the lab.

This course consists of a three-hour weekly lab period and has a corequisite of CHEM 220. Students will work individually for five experiments to apply classical analytical techniques, including titrations, gravimetric analysis, and absorption spectroscopy, while developing proficiency in the proper use of volumetric glassware. Basic analytical principles are illustrated through the chemical analysis of several “unknown” samples, and students will be graded on the accuracy and precision of their results. The students will also work in pairs for three experiments where they will be introduced to modern instrumental methods, such as liquid and gas chromatography. A strong emphasis is placed on scientific documentation, ensuring students develop essential skills in maintaining accurate lab records and reporting results effectively.
