Cobalt, 27, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, South Carolina USA
Cobalt: Ideas from chemistry students to represent the properties of cobalt were compiled, and incorporated into a beach scene, a favourite place for Columbia, SC students. A magnet for cobalt’s ferromagnetic property, and colors — blues, reds, pinks, green and purplish blue — were used to represent the many shades of cobalt-based pigments or halide compounds. A goblin sits mischievously atop the atomic number since cobalt was named for the Kobold, a goblin sprite from German folklore. Additionally, a boat cruises through the waves, as cobalt boats are a favourite watercraft among the students.
