- Prerequisite: CHEM 360
Organic synthesis aims to efficiently create valuable and interesting molecules. To achieve this, modern research focuses on discovering and inventing powerful chemical reactions capable of forming bonds that are challenging or impossible with traditional methods. This course will specifically explore the use of metals in these reactions, with a strong emphasis on homogeneous complexes of late transition metals as catalysts. We'll begin by introducing basic concepts of organometallic reactivity and then move on to modern topics, including palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling, asymmetric hydrogenation, and olefin metathesis.
