Introduction to Scientific Calculations
- Textbook: CHEM 140 course notes and exercises manual.
This course introduces the student to performing scientific calculations using Microsoft Excel. The course incorporates a weekly lecture/tutorial in which program instructions and scientific concepts will be discussed, as well as weekly hands-on computer exercises. Exercises will focus on concepts taken from chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and physics, illustrating the many ways in which Excel can be used as problem solving and analytical tools for scientific investigations and tasks. The goal of this laboratory is to develop the conceptual, analytical, and practical bases of scientific calculations. The scientific calculational concepts that will be addressed in this laboratory include the following:
- Overviews of the basic use and application of Excel
- Scientific plotting and graphs
- Advanced spreadsheet topics
- Statistical analysis in science
- Regression analysis in science
- Solving equations
- Numerical integration and differentiation
- Data manipulation
