CHEM 237

Introductory Biochemistry

This course aims to describe important molecules in biological systems from a chemical perspective beginning with an introduction to the properties of aqueous solutions and the thermodynamics that govern biological reactions. From there, students are introduced to the building blocks of macromolecules: nucleic acids, amino acids, lipids, and carbohydrates by describing both their chemical and physical properties as well as their organization into more complex structures. Particular attention will be given to the structure and function of proteins and enzymes using collagen, myoglobin, hemoglobin, and chymotrypsin as model systems.
