CHEM 331

Fundamentals of Metabolism 1

This course is intended for Honours Biochemistry students, Honours Medicinal Chemistry students, and Honours Chemistry students. The course will cover the central metabolic pathways common to most organisms. The pathways studied will include glycolysis; glycogen metabolism; tricarboxylic acid cycle; oxidative phosphorylation; photosynthesis; gluconeogenesis; fatty acid degradation and synthesis. Emphasis will be on the chemical mechanisms of the enzymes involved and on the concerted regulation and integration of the pathways with each other. We will also discuss how the differences in metabolic pathways between organisms can be exploited for the development of drugs and novel “green” pathways for useful chemicals.
