Advanced Organic Synthesis Laboratory

A laboratory course for students in the Medicinal Chemistry program. The concepts and techniques will build on those from CHEM 360 and CHEM 360L. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to advanced organic synthesis and laboratory techniques used in synthetic organic chemistry. The following techniques will be included: distillation, recrystallization, purification using flash column chromatography, monitoring a reaction by thin layer chromatography, the use of air and moisture sensitive reagents, running reactions under an inert atmosphere, using temperature-controlled heating apparatus, running reactions at sub-zero temperatures, use of a high vacuum pump, slow addition of liquid and solid reagents, 1H NMR, GC-MS, Polarimetry sample preparation and analysis, and preparing and analyzing chiral compounds. This course is designed for students interested in graduate studies and/or a career in synthetic organic chemistry.

The course will consist of a six-hour lab period every week, where experiments will be conducted demonstrating key transformations and techniques in organic chemistry.
