Polymerization techniques beyond traditional free radical polymerization and condensation polymerizations will be introduced. These techniques bring synthetic control over chemical composition, chain length, architecture, and stereochemistry found in macromolecules, which are achieved by varying polymerization conditions and initiating and catalytic systems. The resulting polymers possess functions that can be tailored for various applications involving colloids, engineering plastics, rubbers, or macromolecular structures generated at the nanometer length scale which are of great importance for nanomaterials.
The first week of lectures will be devoted to reviewing the main concepts covered in CHEM 370/MNS 322 that are most relevant for CHEM 400.
