CHEM 430: Enzyme Mechanisms

Enzyme Mechanisms

This special topics course will address the chemical reaction mechanisms that are involved for the six EC classes of enzymes, as well as some of the techniques (kinetic isotope effects, PIX experiments, for example) used to aid in studying how a particular enzyme catalyzes a reaction. A fundamental knowledge of organic chemistry (arrow-pushing) is expected. Studies on the applications of organic chemistry, physical and biophysical techniques to elucidate an enzyme’s mechanism will be presented. The detailed biological chemistry of a variety of cofactors required for the functioning of some of these enzymes will be discussed.
