WICI Talk: Woi Oh
Join us in DC 1301 for refreshments before the talk in DC 1302 on November 3 at 1:00 pm to welcome new WICI member and new faculty member in Systems Design Engineering as he presents his talk:
"Understanding dynamics of forced migration and conflict through the lens of complex systems".
There has been a growing volume of research exploring the relationships between climate, conflict, and forced migration. However, these studies have largely used linear approaches focusing on causal inference and regression. This is ironical since most of the current literature in migration and conflict claim that migration and conflict dynamics are complex. The discrepancy between theoretical foundations and methodological applications is likely to build false assumptions on modeling, fail to make precise predictions, and establish ineffective policies. Instead, I use complex systems approaches to solve the complex dynamics of migration and conflict in linkage with climate extremes. In this talk, I will introduce complex dynamics of migration and conflict and their impact on model performance.
