WICI Virtual Book Club: The Ministry for the Future

Hosted by the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation and Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences

In "The Ministry for the Future", author Kim Stanley Robinson paints a dystopian, yet ultimately hopeful picture of our planet's next century. In this hybrid fiction/non-fiction book, Robinson hypothesizes how a combination of novel policies and major societal changes might allow humans, and the planet that houses us, to emerge positively from the climate crisis.

We invite readers to share in a discussion of Robinson's proposed resolutions to the climate crises, viewed through a complex systems lens, in advance of the upcoming WICI/Fields "Mathematics for Complex Climate Challenges" workshop which will run May 1st - 4th at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Liane Gabora applies complex systems to address the question that stimulated her research program: In what sense does culture evolve?

WICI and Perimeter Institute present the "Hammers & Nails Climate Workshop" on Monday 17th July. This workshop will continue the spirit of theMay 2023 WICI-Fields Math for Complex Climate Challenges Workshop, aiming to bring mathematicians in the same room with experts from climate, energy and biodiversity research. 

WICI Director Dr. Sean Geobey brings community leaders Naudia Banton, Manager of Waterloo Region Small Business Centre, Trevor Charles, Executive Director of LiftOFF, Eric Avner, President and CEO of Waterloo Region Community Foundation, and Carla Leon, President and CEO of Just Like Family Home Care, together to share their perspectives on community wealth building.

Dr. Robert L. Axtell, Professor of Computational Social Science at George Mason University, illustrates how a ‘complexity economics’ approach using large-scale agent-based computing methodology offers novel insights unavailable from conventional rational expectations equilibrium models.

WICI Director Dr. Sean Geobey and his research team share how their work with the Investment Readiness Program, in partnership with Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet), connects with social finance and community-wealth building.
