Award description:
Doctoral Fellowships, valued at up to $120,000, will be awarded to full-time graduate students enrolled in the doctoral program of the Department of Systems Design Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering. The fellowship will be paid to recipients in equal instalments over the standard program length, as long as they remain registered full-time in the doctoral program. Selection will be based on academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average or equivalent in their current or most recently completed graduate program) combined with demonstrated interest in sustainable energy systems. Interested students should submit an application found on the Department of Systems Design website by January 10. This fund is made possible by a donation from David J. and Linda Archer Cornfield.

Value description:
Twelve Awards, valued at up to $120,000 each, paid in equal instalments over the standard program length for an engineering PhD at Waterloo. Six awards will each be given in 2025 and 2026.
Eligibility & selection criteria:
- Full-time graduate students who will be registered in the doctoral program in the Department of Systems Design Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering
- Must be Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident
- Selection to be based on academic excellence (minimum 80% cumulative average or equivalent in their current or most recently completed graduate program) and demonstrated interest in sustainable energy systems as described through the award application
- Interested applicants must apply by January 10 using the application found on the Department of Systems Design Engineering website
- Preference will be given to students who will not be concurrently holding a major scholarship exceeding $5,000 per term at the time of admission
- This fellowship will be in addition to an annual minimum Graduate Research Studentship (GRS) of $10,000 funded by the student's supervisor and an annual GRS of at least $5,000 funded by the Faculty of Engineering
- The annual fellowship will be paid in equal instalments each term for as long as the student is registered full time within time limits of the doctoral program (12 terms)
- Future instalments of the fellowship are contingent upon maintaining good academic standing (as defined by the recipient's academic program) and full-time enrolment in the doctoral program in Systems Design Engineering
- In the event that a recipient fails to meet the renewal criteria, or completes their degree early, residual funds may be used to offer additional (partial) fellowships
- The Department of Systems Design Engineering will normally select recipients in Winter
