Student volunteer opportunities abound

The Campus Life Fair in the Student Life Centre.

by Lucas Dunlop. This is an excerpt of an article that originally appeared on Waterloo Stories.

With fewer students on campus for the spring term, Federation of Students (Feds) campus groups are looking for more volunteers. Volunteering on campus is an easy way to meet new people, make connections and gain additional experience — all while helping your peers.

“I think that you get to learn a lot of things that you wouldn’t learn in a classroom” said Ellie Wang, a volunteer co-ordinator for the Feds Student Food Bank, “It isn’t what I study in school; it’s the activities that I’m involved in, what I do, and how I make a difference. I think those are the memories that I’ll take from university.”

On May 9, Feds hosted its Campus Life Fair, an event held every term, in the Student Life Centre to promote campus initiatives. Groups that participated in this fair were a mix of Feds’ own initiatives, programs run by the University, and groups headquartered at the affiliated and federated institutions of Waterloo.

Attendees included:

The Feds Student Food Bank isn’t just feeling the pinch from the time of year, they’re also facing an increase in student usage of the food bank. According to an article by the CBC, food banks at Canadian universities are seeing as much as a 30 percent increase from last year in the number of students coming through their doors.

A new program run by the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy is bringing Waterloo talent to bear on one of the world’s most pressing challenges – providing clean energy to places where electrical grids have yet to reach.

As part of WISE’s Affordable Energy for Humanity Initiative, the program arranges co-op job opportunities at social enterprises all over the world that are on the front lines of the fight against energy poverty. A cohort of five Waterloo students are currently in the field at organizations in Nigeria, Ghana and the UK, and a new batch of opportunities in Uganda, Malaysia, Nepal, South Africa and Nigeria are currently being advertised through WaterlooWorks.

An information session about these and other opportunities for co-op students to become engaged is scheduled for this Friday, May 18 at 11:30 a.m. in TC 2218. To register, visit portal.uwaterloo.ca. Space is limited.

Interested members of the University community are also encouraged to contact WISE Manager Nigel Moore for more information.
