The year 2020 brought a wave of difficult changes, fears and anxieties – but it also revealed our resilience.
In the 2019-2020 Report on Giving, we’re sharing the vibrant humanity that can happen during difficult times. In the report, you’ll find six stories that begin with loss and uncertainty, and end with hope for the future. All of them come from our own University community.
"While the storm continues around us, this community reminds me that better days are ahead,” says Joanne Shoveller, Vice-President of Advancement at Waterloo.
Each year, the Report on Giving displays the positive effects that donors have at the University of Waterloo.
A message from the Student Success Office (SSO).
Whether studying online or in-person, our international student population is an important part of our Waterloo Warrior community. This year, with COVID-19 travel restrictions and Waterloo’s combined approach to academics, our international students find themselves in a variety of situations. Some are studying remotely from another country, some are here in Canada, and others need to travel to Canada for work or academic reasons. We’re here to support them all.
The University has submitted an International Student Readiness and Responsibility Plan to the Government of Canada. The plan demonstrates how we’re prepared to support our international students, both graduate and undergraduate, arriving from outside of Canada. Some of these supports include:
New - Waterloo Student Quarantine package
COVID-19 Travel and Quarantine checklist – International Student Guide
International Student Travel Plans and Quarantine form
Health Services COVID-19 Testing Assessment Centre
International students will receive the new quarantine package information in the International Student Connection newsletter and through other communications channels. Please keep in mind that travel restrictions are still in place and we should all be minimizing travel. However, these supports are available to students who do need to travel to Canada for work or academic reasons (where online is not an option).
These supports are a combined effort of several units including Campus Wellness, Campus Housing, Food Services, and the Student Success office. If you have questions, please contact the International Student Experience team ise@uwaterloo.ca.
Today, the University will offer its sincere congratulations to its members who are being honoured as part of the President’s Excellence in Teaching and Research awards celebration. University of Waterloo professors, graduate and postdoctoral students who earned awards for either excellence in teaching or distinction in research are being celebrated virtually this year. Their work is a continuous reminder that Waterloo is home to innovators who have an unwavering passion for research and teaching.
Typically, the celebration takes the form of an in-person reception event, but this year the University is celebrating the achievements of the award winners virtually with the entire campus. To see the full list of recipients, visit the Excellence in Teaching and Research website.
Teaching awards celebrate teaching that has lasting, positive effects on students and deepens student learning. The award is open to all those who teach students at the University of Waterloo and is not limited to those holding faculty appointments.
Research awards celebrate significant achievements of faculty members and graduate students in research and innovation that are awarded by national and international foundations, associations, and institutions
Thank you for your dedication to your work as world-class educations and researchers. Congratulations to these individuals of your inspiring achievements.

Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
