I Dewa Made Suparta is a musician, composer, and teacher born to a family of artists in Pengosekan, Bali, Indonesia. Immersed in Balinese gamelan from early childhood, he began performing with the children’s group of his village at age 10. 

Dewa is also a founding member of Çudamani, one of Bali’s most innovative gamelan ensembles, which has engaged in international tours, including performances at sacred music festivals, the Lincoln Center, in Italy, Greece, and Japan. He has engaged in collaborations with international artists, and performed and given workshops worldwide.

Gamelan is an Indonesian term that refers to ensemble. For this concert Dewa Suparta will be joined by Dr. Maisie Sum, and will introduce a new member of the dynasty - Dewa Ayu Devin Sum. 
Gamelan Trio showcases a new work composed for the large gamelan semara dana, traditional pieces performed on the gamelan gender wayang (chamber gamelan for 2 to 4 players), suling (flute), and gamelan genggong (mouth harp made of palm stem). 

Set List: Merak Angelo, Sinom Ladrang, Rebong, Katak Ngotek, Brayut, Batu Gonjak.

In Bali, there are over twenty different gamelan that require two to over fifty players. The pandemic has given rise to technological adaptations of ensemble music.  As the Director of the University of Waterloo Gamelan Ensemble, Dewa Suparta will be leading a Virtual Exploration of Gamelan Music in the Fall 2020 term.
