Anuj playing guitarIf you want to study music, you must first apply through OUAC and be accepted to the University of Waterloo through an entry program. (music is not an entry program). In the Faculty of Arts, you would select your major at the end of your first year, but start taking music courses in your first year.  Anyone in another faculty can take music courses as an elective or part of a music minor at any time their program allows.  It is possible to do joint major studies within the Faculty of Arts (see list of majors) and joint honours across faculties

Note: An audition is required before a music major status is granted and/or before the music studio course (individual performance instruction) is taken (MUSIC 226).  See also Early Scholarship Entrance/pre-approval auditions below.

FAQ:  Do I have to be accepted by the University first, before I audition; or do I audition before I can be accepted by the university?

Auditions

Auditions are not required for University application acceptance.

Typically a level of performance equal to Grade Eight at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto is expected.  (No RCM certificate necessary).

See the Music Studio auditions page for audition dates, requirements and other information.

Early entrance auditions and scholarship opportunity

This is for high school students who wish pre-approval in the Music Studio performance course--which is also a requirement in order to declare music as your major, and to be considered for the entrance scholarships.  These are held in March/April.  Those who do not audition then, can audition as a current student.  Note:  whether you audition early or not will not affect your offer of admission in any way. See auditions page.

Anyone applying through OUAC who miss the early Spring auditions can still audition with the current students wanting to take Music Studio course (individual performance lessons), or with those wanting to declaring music as your major (usually at the end of 1st year), if not already done so for the Music Studio course.  These auditions take place at the beginning of the term they wish to take the course.
