President Feridun Hamdullahpur is in New York City today to report on the gender equality commitments the University of Waterloo has undertaken as part of the HeForShe IMPACT10x10x10 initiative.
Hamdullahpur is present as part of a meeting of 30 IMPACT champions—10 heads of state, 10 global CEOs, and 10 university presidents—who will be unveiling their groundbreaking solutions to the problem of gender inequality in the second annual HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 Parity Report.
At today's IMPACT event, President Hamdullahpur will participate in a panel discussion alongside fellow university leaders John J. DeGioia, president of Georgetown University; Paul Boyle, president and vice-chancellor, University of Leicester; Frederic Mion, president, Sciences Po; Samuel Stanley Jr., MD, president, Stony Brook University; Seiichi Matsuo, president, Nagoya University; and Adam Habib, principal and vice-chancellor, University of the Witwatersrand.
The launch of the HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 Parity Report will be livestreamed beginning at 10:00 a.m. this morning.
The HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality provides a systematic approach and targeted platform on which men and boys can engage and become change agents towards the achievement of gender equality. HeForShe invites men and boys to build on the work of the women's movement as equal partners, crafting and implementing a shared vision of gender equality that will benefit all of humanity.
IMPACT 10x10x10 engages key decision makers at governments, corporations, and universities aroudn the world to drive change from the top. IMPACT champions make gender equality an institutional priority, committing to real change within and beyond each of their organizations. Each IMPACT champion implements the HeForShe IMPACT framework and develops three bold, game-changing commitments to advance and ultimately achieve gender equality for all.

The University of Waterloo has been ranked the number one university in Canada for employer partnerships—and number four in the world—according to the 2018 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings.
This puts Waterloo in the top 1 percent of universities in the world for employer partnerships.
“With our world-class students and co-op employers, it’s no wonder that we’re number one in the nation for employer partnerships,” says Peggy Jarvie, associate provost, Co-operative and Experiential Education. “The collaboration we have with our outstanding faculty, researchers and industry partners contributes to co-op’s success and delivers an unrivaled form of work-integrated learning that produces some of the world’s most employable alumni.”
In determining the score for employer partnerships, the ranking measured which universities are collaborating successfully with global companies to produce citable, transformative research. Only distinct companies producing three or more collaborative papers in a five-year period (2011-2015) are included in the count. This year’s ranking accounts for university collaborations with 2,000 top global companies, as listed by Fortune and Forbes.
Second, the rankings consider work placement-related partnerships as reported by institutions and validated by the QS research team. Both figures are adjusted to account for the number of faculty at each university, and then combined into a composite index.
The rankings examined 500 universities globally. Overall, Waterloo was ranked 24th in the world for graduate employability. The University of Toronto was the only Canadian school that ranked higher overall (18th place).

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
