Course Outline

1. Introduction to network architectures.
   • Evolution of the Internet. Introduction of data communication systems. Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS).
   • Principles of internetworking. (1 week)
2. Optical communication systems (1 week)
3. Basis of routing in optical networks and Internet Protocols (1 week)
4. Network survivability, availability and multi-layer protection schemes (4 weeks)
   • Shared Backup Path Protection (SBPP), Segment Shared Protection (SSP), Ring based protection, Pre-configured cycle (p-cycle), all-optical monitoring systems
5. Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) and the integration of EPON and WiMAX (2 week)

Marking Scheme

• Research project report: 40%
• Reading assignment & presentation: 10%
• Final Exam: 50%
