School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability PhD Candidate Cole Atlin won the inaugural Dr. Jim McDonald Scholarship from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Research (ACUNS). The scholarship is given to graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities whose research pertains to Canada’s north and its inhabitants. The award specifically focuses on interdisciplinary and community based research, particularly with First Nations collaboration. Cole researches the interrelationship between conflict and sustainability in regional Northern mining developments and the need to improve planning and assessment in these regions. These understandings are applied to the Ring of Fire mining developments in Northern Ontario, where she is attempting to develop guiding principles for better assessment design for the region in the future. She works under the supervision of Dr. Robert Gibson. Cole is also a recipient of a SSHRC Doctoral Award and a past recipient of the WCS Weston Fellowship for Northern Research. More information on Cole’s research is available on her website.

Congratulations Cole!
