Derek Armitage is Professor and Director of the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, University of Waterloo. His interdisciplinary research aims to support communities and their partners to sustainably manage oceans, coasts and fisheries in the context of social-ecological change, and with an emphasis on co-management and adaptive governance, community-based conservation, and resilience approaches. He is co-lead of the Vulnerability to Viability Global Partnership for Small-Scale Fisheries, serves as Vice-Chair of the Integrated Marine Biosphere Research program (SCOR/Future Earth), and is a coordinating chapter lead author on the World Ocean Assessment, among other international activities. He is co-editor of several books, including ‘Adaptive Co-Management: Collaboration, Learning and Multi-Level Governance’ (UBC Press), ‘Governance of the Coastal Commons’ (Routledge), and ‘Sea Change: Charting a Sustainable Future for Oceans in Canada’ (UBC Press). He also serves as an editor for several journals, including Conservation Science and Practice, Earth Stewardship and Ocean and Coastal Management.
