Doug Kirton’s work has explored the natural and social landscape, private and public spaces derived from photographic sources, within an ongoing conversation between representation and abstraction. He works primarily in oil paint on canvas in a variety of sizes, although lately he has been doing small studies in acrylic for future larger work.  Doug appreciates the materiality of paint, constructing his paintings from a variety of marks, textures and layers of transparent and opaque colour. His work is represented in numerous public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Museum London, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Shanghai Art Museum. His most recent work was exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Idea Exchange (Preston branch, Cambridge, Ontario) in the fall of 2015 and the Michael Gibson Gallery (London, Ontario) in March, 2016. Throughout his career he has received support from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council and in 2002 was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 2010 he was honoured with the UW Distinguished Teacher Award and the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
