Another retelling to the young
I retell a family history as centred on my great-grandfather, correcting parts I had censored and blunted in dialogue with my baby niece. Separated from his family in Palestine for the last seventeen years of his life, my great-grandfather communicated across new borders through public radio announcements. I take this gulf of communication as the basis for a broader questioning: how do we communicate with the past? Why should we remember the dead? And the piercingly simple questions that perplex a four-year-old girl: why do people disappear? How is it that we can’t see them?
A first iteration of a developing work.
