Congratulations to Robert Steven (Fine Arts BA ’98) who has been appointed the new executive director of the Portrait Gallery of Canada, effective May 2, 2022. He takes over from Joanne Charette who was named the first director of the Portrait Gallery in June 2021. The Portrait Gallery of Canada launched its online presence at portraitcanada.ca in 2020, and currently has no collection or physical presence.
Previously, Robert has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Art Gallery of Burlington, the Culture and Heritage Manager for the City of Grande Prairie, and the Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
