Lisa Birke's work "Calendar Girls" is part of the Canadian Shorts series at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
"Calendar Girls" is a humorous exploration of the societal expectations of woman as aesthetic symbol and performing spectacle who is intrinsically at home in nature. It also plays with the obsession of self-documentation--a "playing to" the camera that currently takes the form of the selfie and the YouTube do-it-yourself music/dance video. The work was filmed unaccompanied by the artist in the the south-western area of Ontario, Canada over the course of a year from January to December 2014.
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
