Curated by abisola oni and Sarah Martin, the exhibition Disembody features the work of emerging artists in the University of Waterloo Department of Fine Arts: Ashley Guenette, Ashley Nicole Harper, Christine DuVuono, Clara Laratta, Connie Kang, Jacob Irish & Julie Hall, Rachel Jung, Renee Christensen, Santosh Chandrasekhar, Stephanie Wilson, Belinda Hall and Wen Li.
Disembody explores the conceptual disembodiment as a liberatory method. In a variety of media and methods, the artists free their internal selves from the heteronormative and colonial norms perpetuated in popular culture. The curatorial vision emphasizes the artists’ ability to restructure given realities and put forward critical, inclusive and anti-colonial truths.
The exhibition runs from February 3–26, 2023 at the Watson, Cayley & Ferrie Galleries, 1754 Old Mill Road, Kitchener, Ontario. Closing Reception: Saturday February 25, 2023 from 2-4pm
The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
