The Keith and Win Shantz International Research Scholarship is funded through an endowment from Win Shantz, a prominent Waterloo supporter of the arts. Each year, our first year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students spend six weeks in the summer of their third term studying abroad with a professional artist. Each student receives approximately $9000 to cover accommodations, living and travel expenses. In recent years students have gone to the Netherlands, England, Germany, Scotland, Spain, Denmark, Brazil, China and the United States.
This innovative program provides students with the unique opportunity to travel, to experience the wide range of activities of professional artists, and to gain some valuable insight into the business of making art. Students submit wish lists of where they would like to go and who they would like to study with. Following this, our faculty works to find the best match. Since its inception in 1995, the program has proven to be mutually beneficial to our students and the participating artists alike. To date, our students have studied with renowned artists such as David Batchelor, Martin Creed, Thomas Demand, Stephen Ellis, Ceal Floyer, Nicola Hicks, John Hartman, Philip Pearlstein, Thomas Scheibitz, Jana Sterbak, Ciara Phillips, Dana Schutz, Jonas Burgert, Steve Lambert, Kim Adams, Angela de la Cruz and Donald Sultan, to name only a few.
