The Summit is an interactive exhibition that gives our Global Engagement students the unique opportunity to share their research projects on this year’s theme, “Me and my Robot.”

Starting at 7:00 pm at United College’s Alumni Hall, we'll hear from panel speakers Heather Woods, Kristen Thomasen, AJung Moon, Evan Ackerman and Ryan Gariepy and interact with the student projects.

This is a public event featuring projects by our Global Engagement Seminar students and contributions from our six distinguished 2024 Jarislowsky fellows.

Starting at 7:00 pm at United College’s Ceremonial Firegrounds, we’ll proceed to Alumni Hall shortly after to hear from keynote speaker Catherine Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of Destination Zero, and interact with the student projects.

This is a public event featuring projects by our Global Engagement Seminar students and contributions from our six distinguished 2023 Jarislowsky fellows. 

During the Winter 2022 Global Engagement Seminar (GES), Hannah Anderson worked as Course and Research Assistant and mentor to the students. As they prepare for the GES Summit on April 4, she shares a bit about her experiences with the seminar, particularly one project that is helping to tell the story of the Grand River through maps.

We invite you to join the Global Engagement 2022 Desmarais Family Summit on Monday April 4, starting at 6:00 pm at the St. Paul's Ceremonial Firegrounds, then proceeding to Alumni Hall, St Paul's University College. This is a public event featuring projects by our Global Engagement Seminar students, and contributions from our six distinguished 2022 Jarislowsky fellows.

The Global Engagement Seminar (GES) will be holding a virtual Summit that will consist of a panel discussion from our Jarislowsky Fellows as well as an exhibiton of student projects focused on the Pandemic.

Edward Burtynsky lecture for GESP students

The Global Engagement Seminar's ARTS 490, The Future of Nature, was among the 975 Faculty of Arts courses that had to pivot to online delivery in mid-March. The class was deep into preparing final team projects that would have been presented at the public Summit held at the Balsillie School in early April. Along with the Summit cancellation, there would also be no public keynotes by the GES mentors, renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky and prolific scholar and expert on socio-political activism Mike Davis.

This year's first Fellow is EDWARD BURTYNSKY. He is regarded as one of the world's most accomplished contemporary photographers. His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Tate Modern in London, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California.

This two day Summit will showcase the research of GES Program students. Interactive student exhibitions will be on display, inviting participation from the broader Waterloo community.

A Renaissance Man for the 21st century, Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist, composer, artist, and author who writes on numerous topics, including high-technology business, the social impact of technology, the philosophy of consciousness and information, Internet politics, and the future of humanism.
