Award description: 

An award, valued at $5,000, will be presented annually to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in any year of the undergraduate or master’s program in the School of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering. Selection is based on excellence in design and/or design initiative with distinctively actionable potential to positively impact Canadian communities with architecture that is thought-provoking, collaborative, and sustainable. Selection will consider all or some of the following categories: sustainability; transdisciplinary thinking; social value; and design excellence. Students interested in applying must submit an application form that can be found on the School of Architecture website, by the deadline advertised, normally each spring. This fund is made possible by a donation from Lemay Architects.

Eligibility & selection criteria: 
  • Full-time undergraduate student enrolled in any year or a master’s student registered in the School of Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering
  • Selection to be based on excellence in design and/or design initiative with distinctively actionable potential to positively impact Canadian communities with architecture that is thought-provoking, collaborative, and sustainable. It should accomplish some or all of the following:
    • Sustainability: Demonstrate beneficial environmental performance and/or carbon footprint with supporting metrics where available via sustainable systems and/or construction, pushing the boundaries of biophilia, supportive of user health and wellness—net-zero, regenerative, and circular designs for the local ecosystem.
    • Transdisciplinary Thinking: Ability to be innovative upon concept, process, materials, building systems, and/or implementation is crucial, and be an illustration of holistic thinking which integrates multiple disciplines and perspectives.
    • Social Value: Contribute to its community’s well-being and foster social equity through its operations, how it handles boundaries between site and a surrounding social context, expressions of identity, and ability to exhibit ethical & inclusive practices in building and operations where possible.
    • Design Excellence: Focus on physical organization and form, including attention to composition and detail in ways which respond to their programming, site, and geographic/social/urban context.
  • Students interested in being considered for this award must submit an award application that can be found on the School of Architecture website
  • The School of Architecture will select recipients normally each Spring
