Award description: 

Subject to review by UW Senate Graduate & Research Council, the Award will be described in UW publications as follows: Pure Math Graduate Entrance Scholarships are available to students applying for admission and admitted to a master’s (MMath) or doctoral program in the Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Recipients must be registered full time in their program during the terms in which the scholarship is held. A departmental selection committee will automatically consider applicants to the program based on information provided in their application for admission.

Eligibility & selection criteria: 
  • Students must be applying for full-time admission and be admitted to a master’s (MMath) or doctoral program in the department of Pure Math
  • Selection will be made automatically based on the student’s application for admission to the program. Recipients will be selected by a committee chaired by the Associate Chair Graduate Studies on the advice of the Graduate Admissions sub-committee in the Department of Pure Mathematics. Selection will be made as offers of admission are made throughout the year.
  • Must be registered full time in the MMath or PhD program in Pure Math during the terms in which the scholarship is held.
  • Students cannot hold another major award in the term(s) they receive the entrance scholarship.
  • For entrance scholarships provided to MMath students, the award will normally be used to fund the student at the standard PhD funding level.
  • For entrance scholarships provided to doctoral students, the award will normally be used to reduce the TA load by one in the first year from that normally required in the standard PhD funding package; the funding level will remain the same as what was offered in the admission letter.
