The University of Waterloo is pleased to accept applications from excellent Colombian students who will be applying for the COLFUTURO Joint Graduate Loan-Scholarship Program.

Waterloo is a member of the CALDO consortium, an association of Canada's leading research universities committed to international education. CALDO is currently working with these Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Scholarship Overview

To foster cooperation and enhance connections through the provision of shared financing for talented Colombian students admitted to graduate programs at the University of Waterloo within the framework of the Joint Graduate Loan-Scholarship Program.

COLFUTURO finances full-time residential programs abroad, with a duration ranging between 9 and 24 months, through a loan of up to US$50,000, 80% of which may become a grant. The beneficiary of the program has the autonomy to use the amount requested to cover tuition, insurance, accommodation, materials, and living expenses.

What does the Scholarship Cover?

  • Airfare
  • Settling Allowance (one-time payment of up to 2,000 USD)
  • Tuition (Waterloo assesses domestic tuition for doctoral students and research master’s)
  • University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)
  • A living allowance (up to 2,000 per month USD)
  • Textbooks and computer allowance (maximum 2,000 USD per year)
  • Debtors insurance

NOTE: COLFUTURO provides each beneficiary with a sponsorship letter indicating the total amount of the loan scholarship.

Eligible Program(s)

  • Doctoral studies for up to 4 (four) years (domestic tuition assessed)
  • Research Master’s programs for up to 2 (two) years (domestic tuition assessed)
  • Coursework Master’s programs (international tuition assessed)

Doctoral Funding

  • The scholarship provides a set amount of funding (including but not limited to tuition and fees, health insurance (UHIP) and living allowance/stipend) for doctoral programs.
  • Domestic tuition will be assessed.
  • The Faculty/Program/Supervisor will be required to provide support to ensure minimum funding levels are met for any terms/years that are not covered by COLFUTURO for a maximum of 4 years or 12 terms, which is the expected time to completion.

Master’s Research Funding

  • The scholarship provides a set amount of funding (including but not limited to tuition and fees, health insurance (UHIP) and living allowance/stipend) for doctoral programs.
  • Domestic tuition will be assessed.

Master’s Coursework Funding

  • The scholarship provides a set amount of funding (including but not limited to tuition and fees, health insurance (UHIP) and living allowance/stipend) for doctoral programs.
  • International tuition will be assessed.
  • No additional UW funding will be provided.

English for Academic Success (EFAS)

  • Not covered under this agreement

COLFUTURO application procedure

  1. Visit  https://www.colfuturo.org/ for scholarship deadlines.
  2. Applicants contact universities and submit online applications and supporting documents.
  3. Applicants apply to COLFUTURO, including Waterloo's Offer of Admission in their application package.
  4. COLFUTURO confirms the scholarship.

Applying to Waterloo

  • Minimum admission requirements include a 3.7/5 overall GPA. Some programs may require a higher average.
  • Certification of English language proficiency (ELP) through one of the accepted examinations is required.
  • Prospective graduate students apply online.
    • In the Other Information section, under International Agreements, select Colombia: Colfuturo.
  • Some agreements provide a preliminary sponsorship or scholarship letter, if applicable, email a pdf copy to an admissions specialist. Remember to include your full name and your 8 digit (numerical only) Waterloo student ID number.

Important:

  • The sponsorship documentation must detail the approved program, financial support amount and the number of years the funding has been granted (a minimum of two years for a master’s research program and a minimum of four years for a PhD program).
  • Please refer to Arranging your fees with a third-party sponsorship on the Finance website for the information required in the official sponsorship documentation. If there is any change in your funding situation, the University of Waterloo may re-evaluate your Offer of Admission, and reserves the right to withdraw your Offer of Admission or withdraw you from your graduate program.
