In less than three weeks, the University of Waterloo's 7th annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) season will commence with the first faculty-based heat, Electrical and Computer Engineering!
Over 200 graduate students have registered for the 2019 3MT competition and are working to perfect their three-minute presentations and their one static slide. Over the years, our 3MT competitors have told us about many unique ways that they have prepared their presentations, including:
- Recording their voice and listening to the recording while driving
- Practicing in front of peers, friends, family members, or anyone else who will listen!
- Purposely deviating from their script to practice recovering from mistakes
- Speaking in front of a mirror to correct gestures
- Attending an appointment at the Writing and Communication Centre
- Continuing to practice with peers they met at the 3MT bootcamp
- Practicing in multiple spaces, larger rooms, and in hallways to learn how to deal with distractions
- Organizing a mock 3MT with their lab mates
All of this practicing results in outstanding presentations about the exciting research our graduate students are engaged in. Find a faculty-based heat happening near you to watch the presentations live, and best of luck to all of the 2019 3MT competitors as they practice for their faculty-based heat!
