General Information

What is a Pow Wow? 

  • A Pow Wow is a gathering that celebrates Indigenous cultures through song, dance, community, and ceremony. It is a space of respect, learning, and connection. 

Is the Pow Wow open to the public? 

  • Yes, everyone is welcome. Visitors are encouraged to attend respectfully and learn about Indigenous cultures. 

Is there an admission fee? 

  • This year, the Pow Wow is free to attend!  

Event Details

Where is the event located? 

  • University of Waterloo, Columbia Icefield (CIF), Outdoor Field 7220 Columbia St W, Waterloo, ON N2L 0A1. You can view the map of the Pow Wow grounds here (link map when it is complete, hopefully by July 1st!) 

What is the schedule of events? 

  • The Pow Wow will run from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Check out here for the full schedule and specials! 

Will there be food available? 

  • Yes, there will be vendors offering a variety of food option. 

Can I bring my own food?  

  • Yes, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks,. 

Are there vendors or artisans? 

  • Yes, local Indigenous vendors and artists will be present. Please support them respectfully. 

Accessibility

Is there accessible parking on campus? 

  • Yes, accessible parking is .  

Who can I reach out to for accessibility needs? 

Are there accessible washrooms? 

  • Yes, accessible washrooms are on-site  

Volunteering

Can I volunteer at the Pow Wow? 

  • Yes! Volunteers are welcome. Please sign up through here

What kinds of volunteer roles are available? 

  • Roles may include event setup, guest support, vendor assistance, and cleanup.

Logistics

Where can I park? 

  • Free event Parking is available at the Open Text Parking Lot across from the venue  

GRT and ION routes: 

  • If travelling with ION, arrive at the University of Waterloo Station. From the UW Station, take one of the following bus routes to arrive in front of CIF:

  • 13, 31, 19, and 9 

What should I bring? 

  • Lawn chairs or blankets, water, sunscreen, and cash for vendors. 

Is the event indoors or outdoors? 

  • The event is outdoors, make sure to dress appropriately.  

What happens if it rains? 

  • The event is rain or shine unless there is extreme weather or a thunderstorm 

Additional

Are there designated seating areas? 

  • Seating is first come, first serve. Certain areas may be reserved for dancers, Elders, and drum groups. Please follow posted signage. 

Are there rules I should follow as a visitor?

  • Please listen to the MC for guidance. 

  • Stand during Grand Entry and when asked. 

  • Always ask permission before taking close-up photos of dancers or regalia. 

  • Treat the arena and all participants with respect. 

  • Smoke in the designated area  

Can I take photos or videos? 

  • Photography is usually allowed, but not all dances can be photographed. Please follow announcements and ask permission when appropriate. 

Can I participate in dances? 

  • Some dances are open to everyone (e.g., intertribal dances). The MC will announce when visitors are welcome to join! 

What should I wear? 

  • Casual, comfortable clothing is fine. Please dress respectfully for a cultural event.
