GIS Day Workshop: Introduction to Web Mapping and WebGISExport this event to calendar

Wednesday, November 15, 2023 — 2:30 PM to 3:20 PM EST

Date: Wed Nov 15
Time: 2:30 – 3:20
Location: Dana Porter Library, Room 323

This workshop will introduce creating web maps and basic web-based GISs.

Starting with a conceptual introduction to spatial web development, the workshop will cover different technologies that are commonly used to create web maps and GISs, such as:

  • JavaScript web mapping libraries (e.g., Leaflet, MapBox/MapLibre, OpenLayers, ArcGIS SDK for JavaScript)
  • Frontend JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React and Svelte)
  • Backend software (e.g., GeoDjango, Postgres/PostGIS, ArcGIS Online)
  • R-Shiny

Next there will be a practical demonstration of how to create a basic web map using the ArcGIS SDK for JavaScript in a Svelte environment. Please note: a Svelte boilerplate will be provided, and the map will fetch layers from an ArcGIS Online Feature Layer, so the workshop will not include how to use Svelte or how to set up a web server.

The workshop will end with a brief overview of how to use GitHub/GitHub Pages to host web maps for free.

Some prior GIS and programming experience is recommended for those attending this workshop. However, prior knowledge of JavaScript is not necessary. Please bring your own computer.
