Library Lens - week 44

The weather may have turned cool, but it didn't dampen the spirits of library staff!

"On November 12^th, the Department of History, Eva Dodsworth (Geospatial Centre), and Jane Forgay (History Librarian) hosted a History Speaker Series presentation by Dr. Jim Clifford in the FlexLab, "Mapping London's Global Hinterlands: Spatial Text Mining Eight Million Pages of Nineteenth Century Texts”. Dr. Clifford presented on digital techniques, including text mining, relational databases, geographic information systems mapping (GIS) and information visualization to explore the spread of commodity frontiers, the expansion of global trade and the resulting environmental consequences through the study of nineteenth-century London's global supply chains. The Geospatial Centre offered a tour after the presentation which featured a display of historical topographic maps, road maps, fire insurance plans, and air photos." "I paid a recent visit to Ottawa and had arranged for a private tour of the Library of Parliament.  We toured the main floor, walked along the balconies with their glass floors (the pics are taken from the upper level) as well as behind the scenes, seeing offices, reading rooms, the last remaining original staircase (from 1876 and surviving the 1916 fire), and two floors of archives."
