The 2016 Rotman International Trading Competition took place February 18 – 20 in Toronto, Ontario. The team from UWaterloo was one of 52 teams visiting from across Canada and the globe.
The competition included six different trading cases, all of which were different and required building models to simulate a trading experience. Each case was completed in 4-5 rounds while competing against other teams. Decisions about which team had the best model were decided based on success of the model and how the team faired against others.
UWaterloo placed 5th out of the 52 teams. This year was the highest placement for UWaterloo, beating out many highly ranked schools. "Consistency is key, you can't be too aggressive," explained RITC team member Jimmy Fang. "We tried for a top 15 finish in each case. We placed in the top 10 in four cases and placed in the top 20 for all six."
While the team didn't place in the top three in any case, by giving each case an equal amount of time and effort allowed them to place in the top 5 overall.
