The Mechatronic Vehicle Systems Lab is working on making tires smart by embedding sensors to directly measure tire forces, inflation pressure, and road condition. These smart tires can effectively reduce vehicle fatalities and also improve vehicles’ fuel economy especially in trucks by monitoring tire inflation pressure. The tire force and road condition information can be used directly in vehicle control systems to prevent vehicle instability in harsh situations.
This project is being done through finite element modelling of tire, sensor selection and analysis, prototyping, and experiments.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Indigenous Initiatives Office.
