Bernard Herbert Suits is known for his contributions to the Philosophy of Sport. Suits’ philosophic inquiry into games and gaming can be seen in his publication “The Grasshopper: Games, Life and Utopia”. Additionally, Suits was the president of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport.
Born in Detroit, Suits served in the Navy before receiving his PhD in Philosophy from University of Illinois. Suits came to the University of Waterloo in 1966 where he remained until his retirement in 1994. He was awarded a Distinguished teaching Award in 1982. As well as teaching at Waterloo Suits contributed through service to the department as the Philosophy Chair, as well as service to the faculty of Arts as Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs.
