Waterloo Region Trials New Safety Measures at Roundabouts

The Region of Waterloo is taking steps to improve safety at its roundabouts to better protect pedestrians and cyclists.

New button-activated flashing lights will be installed at the roundabout on Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street in Cambridge, while raised crosswalks will be added at Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road in Kitchener. Additionally, in Waterloo, the Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard roundabout will feature both button-activated flashing lights and raised crosswalks. The three locations were selected based on pedestrian volumes, collision history, presence of multiple lanes, and geographic distribution.

According to Dr. Jeff Casello, implementing raised sidewalks or flashing lights would make drivers more aware of potential dangers. He emphasized the importance of providing clear, visual cues that encourage drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant, especially when there are other roundabout users, whether they are pedestrians or cyclists.
