Biography

Leia Minaker is the inaugural Director of the Future Cities Institute founded by CAIVAN at the University of Waterloo, and an Associate Professor in the School of Planning in the Faculty of Environment. She holds a PhD in Public Health and her research focuses on designing cities to improve health, with a focus on urban food systems, urban design for mental health, and housing and health. She works with cities across Canada to implement data-driven decision making processes, as well as industry and non-governmental partners to create positive impact in society.

She received a PhD in public health from the University of Alberta in 2013, and held a Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute Career Development Award in Cancer Prevention from 2016-2019, focusing on youth health and policies and environments that support cancer prevention. Her research broadly focuses on planning and public health, with a particular focus on food systems, youth health, and health equity.

In the Faculty of Environment, she typically teaches the large (>300 students) first year required statistics course, a large, 4th year course cross-listed between Planning, Health and Geography called Health, Environment and Planning, and she teaches Data, Methods and Models for Future Cities in the Master of Future Cities program.
