Advancing Water Technologies (AWT) Program - administered by the Southern Ontario Water Consortium (SOWC)

Eligibility:

Industry partner:

  • Canadian registered for-profit companies operating under the laws of Ontario or Canada with a minimum of two full-time employees or that have been in operation for a minimum of two years
  • Located in southern Ontario and able to demonstrate economic benefit to southern Ontario
  • No more than one project per company
  • New partnerships are encouraged but not required

Academic partner:

  • Hold an academic appointment and be eligible to hold research funds at their respective SOWC member post-secondary institution

Academic post-secondary institution:

  • SOWC institutional members in good standing with the consortium

Awarded:

  • Applications will be assessed and approved on an on-going basis
  • Successful applicants (industry partner) will be required to enter into an agreement with the academic institution where the academic partner is appointed (project institutional partner)

Start date:

 Immediate

Research focus areas:

  • Industry-led R&D projects that seek to develop globally competitive technologies, products, or services in the water sector
  • Applicants seeking to develop a technology and remove commercialization barriers associated with any aspect of the product’s innovation chain are particularly encouraged to apply
  • Technologies where the prototype is ready for demonstration (i.e that should be launched to market in no more than 18 months) in an appropriate operational environment e.g. field testing, validation, and demonstration of technology
  • The following R&D activities will be considered:
    • Prototyping
    • Demonstration projects (projects involving a product that is fully developed are NOT eligible)
    • Advanced product development
    • Applied research leading to a practical commercial application
    • Certification/verification that is part of a larger project to support product and/or technology development may be eligible
Amount:
  • Up to $100,000 CAD toward eligible project costs
  • Industry partners must provide 1:1 matching funds (cash and/or in-kind)
Length of project:
  • Up to 12 months in length, a maximum of 2 years may be approved
  • All eligible project expenses must be incurred by December 31, 2018

Program submission instructions:

  1. Interested applicants must first complete the project intake form. Applicants are encouraged to contact SOWC early in the process to determine the project and applicant’s fit with the AWT program. The industry partner may initiate this stage on its own or with an identified academic partner and/or host academic post-secondary institution
  2. Full application materials will be provided to the industry partner subject to project intake form approval only. The industry partner must complete the application in collaboration with the academic partner
