Program name: UW/SSHRC Seed Grant
Research focus areas: Social Sciences and Humanities and Fine- and Performing-Arts
Eligibility: Applicants must be tenured or tenure-track SSHRC-eligible faculty who have applied to an external SSHRC competition or held an external SSHRC grant within the previous three years. 
An exception to this is new faculty: those in their first three years of appointment are eligible to receive UW/SSHRC Seed Grant funding without having first sought external SSHRC funds.
Eligible expenses: Salaries of research assistants, minor equipment, databases, supplies, and travel essential for the conduct of the research.
Costs of short distance travel within Southwestern Ontario must be justified.
Requests for equipment or software must be justified and identified as essential to the success of the project, and must explain why available on-campus facilities are not adequate.
Evaluation of applications: Funding decisions for this program will be made by the UW/SSHRC Grant Review Committee. When the Committee requires further input, the applicant’s Department Chair/School Director and Faculty Dean will be asked for a confidential evaluation of the proposal.
Industry partner: Not required
Program deadline: April 30
Notification: Decisions will be mailed to applicants by June 30
Amount: Up to $5,500
Length of project: May 1 to April 30, plus one extension year upon approval
Final report requirement: Three months following the termination of the grant, a one page final report including a summary of the research results and their general significance is to be submitted to the Secretary of the UW/SSHRC Grant Review Committee.

Submit two documents:

  1. Office of Research Cover Sheet
    1. Please submit the cover sheet in hardcopy (only), with appropriate signatures, to the Secretary, UW/SSHRC Grants Committee in the Office of Research
  2. One electronic copy (PDF) of the application form and all supporting documents.The single PDF file containing all documents (except the cover sheet) should be submitted via e-mail to the Secretary, UW/SSHRC Grants Committee. All files must be combined into one PDF; applications not presented in this format will be rejected
    1. Application form (Adobe Reader is most compatible)
    2. Detailed description of proposal (4 pages maximum)
    3. List of references (1 page maximum)
    4. Budget justification (1 page maximum)
    5. SSHRC CV (with research contributions) or Canadian Common CV
    6. UW/SSHRC Seed Grant, UW/HSS Endowment and/or 4A Award final reports from the last 5 years (if applicable)
